Background: Britain's top motor rally started today (Saturday) with overnight snowfalls promising tricky conditions for the 249 crews competing. The event is the annual R.A.C. (Royal Automobile Club) rally contested over a 2,500 mile (4,230 Kms) route around England, Scotland and Wales, starting out from the Yorkshire town of Harrogate.
First car off today was the Lancia of Swedes Harry Kallstrom and Gunnar Haggbom, winners of the event for the last two years. They head a strong Scandinavian challenge. But there are also crews from several other European countries -- including East Germany and Czechoslovakia -- and from Japan.
