Background: A scale model of anew West German space re-entry vehicle was tested by the West German Air Force at Rendsburg air base on Thursday (12 August). The vehicle, called the "Bumerang", is designed for re-entry flights by astronauts from proposed stations into the atmosphere and can be re-used for further flights. The model is 10 feet (3.10 M) long, has a wingspan of 6 feet (approx 2 M) and weighs 960 its (400 kgs). It was dropped from 18,000 feet (approx 5,000 M).
SYNOPSIS: A West German Air Force Transall aircraft was prepared for a special flight at the Rendsburg base on the North Sea island of Helogland on Thursday.
The Transall was carrying a scale model of a new space re-entry vehicle. The vehicle, called the "Bumerang", is being built by West Germany and has been developed by the American National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). The model has a wingspan of six feet, is ten feet long and weighs 900 pounds. Called the LB-21, it was built by a Bremen Engineering firm.
For Thursday's test, the model can strapped underneath the Transall which airlifted it over the North Sea dropping zone.
At 18,000 feat, the switch was pulled and the model dropped away -- to be saved from destruction by a parachute. Below, a recovery vessel waited to bring the model ashore. The "Bumerang" is designed for repeated trips returning astronauts from proposed space station back through the earth's atmosphere.
