Background: Research workers at a United States Navy laboratory in Son Diego are preparing a species of sea lion, said to be untrainable, for deep-sea tests which they hope will provide new information about the marine environment.

The sea lion, named Runner and weighing 800 pounds (326kg), is a member of the Stellar's species -- once believed to be too stupid or stubborn to train.

At maturity, Runner will weigh about a ton and will be able to dive as deep as 2,000 feet (600 metres). The researchers hope that one day this ability will enable Runner to provide mare knowledge about the diver's "Bends" -- the formation of nitrogen bubbles in the joints, lunge and brain of a diver surfacing too quickly.
