Background: Egyptian freighter "Cleopatra" is registered in Alexandra. Capt. M. Mandour. Gross tonnage 8193. Bound for Barcelona from New York. With general cargo (I believe this ship made news while in New York).
She flies flag of U.A.R.
She ran aground at about 1.00 pm today in a beautiful day hot, clear and calm with a cloudless sky. Witnesses to the event say she was turning round the bay of Gibraltar with most of the crew looking at bathers on beach when the crash came.
As can be seen from film she is well up on rocks with considerably underwater damage. Norwegian salvage tug "Hercules" standby in case of need. Captain of freighter is going to try and take the ship off without the help of tug.
Shall follow up the story tomorrow. N. Cumming
