Background: Paraguayan President Alfredo Stroessner arrived in the Taiwanese capital, Taipei, on Monday (22 September) for four days of talks with Nationalist Chinese Government leaders.
President Stroessner and his party of 60 top Paraguayan officials were greeted at the airport by Nationalist President Yen Chia-kan and a number of government and civic leaders. The Paraguayan leader was accorded a full ceremonial welcome.
President Stroessner is one of South America's longest-serving leaders. He has been continually in office since 1954 ... and has witnessed many swift government upheavals in neighbouring states.
During his four-day visit, the President will hold talks with government officials on a number of cultural, commercial and technical matters.
On Monday night, at a state banquet held in President Stroessner's honour, the Paraguayan leader and President Yen presented each with decorations to symbolise the good relations between their two countries.
