Background: THE THAI VERIFICATION TEAM WHICH HAD BEEN POLICING THE BORDER BETWEEN THE MALAYSIAN TERRITORY OF SARAWAK AND INDONESIAN BORNEO PULLED OUT ON SUNDAY FOLLOWING THE BREAKDOWN OF THE MALAYSIA SUMMIT TALKS IN TOKYO.

FROM THE TEBEDU CHECKPOINT IN SARAWAK, THEY FLEW BY HELICOPTER TO NEARBY KUCHING TO PREPARE TO RETURN TO BANGKOK. THEY QUIT THE CHECKPOINT AFTER A NOTE FROM TUNKU ABDUL RAHMAN, THE MALAYSIAN PRIME MINISTER, WHO AT THE SAME TIME THANKED THEM FOR THEIR CO-OPERATION.

ONE OF THEIR LAST TASKS HAD BEEN TO GRANT A SAFE CONDUCT TO 32 INDONESIAN INSURGENTS UNDER THE TERMS OF THE SHORT-LIVED CEASEFIRE. IT WAS REPORTED LATER THAT THE INDONESIANS HAD ONLY BEEN IN THE JUNGLE A FEW DAYS, NOT SOME WEEKS AS WAS FIRST THOUGHT. THEY WERE DESCRIBED AS "FAKES".

TWO DAYS AFTER THE BREAKDOWN OF THE TOKYO TALKS BETWEEN MALAYSIA, INDONESIA, AND THE PHILIPPINES, IT WAS ANNOUNCED THAT FIVE BRITISH GURKHAS WERE KILLED AND FIVE WOUNDED IN A JUNGLE ATTACK BY INDONESIAN INFILTRATORS.

THE CLASH ALSO CAME AT THE SAME TIME THAT MALAYSIA ANNOUNCED THAT MILITARY ACTION AGAINST THE INSURGENTS WOULD BE RESUMED, AND THAT NO FURTHER SAFE CONDUCT WAS TO BE GIVEN.

FROM DJAKARTA TODAY (TUESDAY) IT WAS REPORTED THAT INDONESIAN VOLUNTEERS ARE "FLOODING ENEMY-HELD TERRITORY" ALONG THE MALAYSIAN BORDER. IN SINGAPORE, THE MALAYSIAN DEPUTY PREMIER, TUN ABDUL RAZAK, SAID THE BREAKDOWN OF THE TOKYO TALKS HAD NOT "CLOSED THE DOOR" FOR FURTHER ATTEMPTS TO SETTLE THE DISPUTE WITH INDONESIA.
