    Background: DORTMUND, WEST GERMANY

The Soviet hockey team had an easy 8-2 victory over 19-times world champions Canada in a Group A world championship match in Dortmund on April 19. The Soviet players, wearing white, and in magnificent form, swept four goals past the Canadian defence in the first nineteen minutes of play. It was only at the very end of the first period that Dennis Maruk was able to break through with a goal for Canada. The second period began with the USSR scoring another goal. Darryl Sittler replied for Canada, to give his country its only goal of the match, bringing the score to 5-2. A fight then erupted around the Soviet goal, but this was soon resolved, allowing the Soviet players to resume their victory run: Michaeil Vassileyev and Sergei Makarov, who had both scored in the first period, put their team 7-2 ahead. The final score of 8-2 left the Soviet Union well-placed to go forward to the semi-finals.
