Background: GUGULETU, NEAR CAPE TOWN, SOUTH AFRICA

Calm returned to the demolished shanty town of Guguletu, near Cape Town, South Africa, on February 16 -- after authorities had knocked down over 400 makeshift shelters the previous day. Police used armoured vehicles, tear gas and do??? to control crowds as the work was carried out. Despondent squatters were left to pick up the remains of their temporary homes. Workmen had removed building materials, and those who remained had to cook and clean as best they could. Two hundred people were permitted to remain at the camp, and some residents started rebuilding their temporary shelters using string and branches from trees. A delegation of opposition members of parliament, led by civil rights spokeswoman, Helen Suzmann, met Doctor Piet Koornhof, Minister for Co-operation and Development, in an effort to reverse the government's demolition policy. Mrs. Suzmann said it was a crude and useless method of tackling the housing problems of the area, and added that most of the 1,000 estimated residents were there legally.
