Background: TWENTY-ONE PEOPLE, INCLUDING 12 CHILDREN, WERE RESCUED FROM A REMOTE AREA OF SOUTHERN CHILE ON WEDNESDAY (17 SEPTEMBER) AFTER THEIR AIRCRAFT, A CHILEAN AIR FORCE TWIN OTTER, CUSHION LANDED IN THE TREETOPS OF A THICK FOREST JUST SHORT OF A 3,000 FT (900-METRE) PRECIPICE.

THE ONLY ILL EFFECTS WERE COLDS SUFFERED BY SOME OF THE CHILDREN, BROUGHT ON BY CONTINUOUS RAIN SINCE THE AIRCRAFT CRASHED ON SUNDAY (14 SEPTEMBER) NIGHT.

THE PLANE, WHICH LOST ITS WINGS ON IMPACT, SAT ON BRANCHES MORE THAN 100FT (30 METRES) ABOVE THE GROUND. HAD IT SLID A FEW FEET FURTHER, THE PLANE WOULD HAVE TUMBLED INTO A 3,000FT (900-METRE) ABYSS.

THE AIRCRAFT CRASHED WHILE ON A FLIGHT FROM PUERTO MONTT, 900 MILES (1,450 KILOMETRES) SOUTH OF SANTIAGO, TO SEGUNDO CORRAL, A MOUNTAIN TOWN NEAR THE CHILEAN BORDER WITH ARGENTINA.

THE PILOT, JUAN BODADILLA, AGED 23, DECIDED TO CRASH LAND THE AIRCRAFT ON THE WOOD 'CARPET' WHEN THE OTTER FLEW INTO A VIOLENT ELECTRICAL STORM AND AS A RESULT LOST FUNCTION OF ITS ELECTRICAL SYSTEM.

THE CHILDREN WERE ON THE FLIGHT AS GUESTS OF A LOCAL CLUB.
