Background: Two bomb explosions ripped though a floating restaurant in Saigon Saturday (26 June), killing 42 persons and injuring 80.It is believed to have been the work of Viet Cong terrorists.
The first bomb caused some casualties, but its purpose apparentl was to cause the other people in the restaurant to flee in panic.Many did.They ran up the gangway and when the first of them reached this point...there came the second explosion.
The explosive used...Americans authorities in Saigon believe..was a Claymore mine -- a mine the Americans designed to counter "human sea" attacked under high explosives it fires a fan of ball bearing that cut down everything before them like a giant shotgun blast.
It is believed the Viet Cong picked to bomb the floating My Canh restaurant because it is frequented primarily by Europeans, Americans and South Vietnamese government officials.(No government officials were killed).Police had intelligence reports two days before that unusual activity in the waterfront area of Saigon that the My Canh would be the next target of Viet Cong terrorism.
The United States Ambassador to South Viet Nam...Maxwell Taylor.visited the hospital where the injured were taken.He also toured the area where the bomb blast took place.
There are reports from Saigon that the Viet Cong has put Taylor high on its death list.
