    Background: GEORGE SEFERIS OR SEFERIADIS, THE GREEK POET AND DIPLOMAT, HAS WON THE 1963 NOBEL PRIZE FOR LITERATURE. THE AWARD WAS ANNOUNCED IN STOCKHOLM TODAY (THURSDAY). HE IS THE FIRST GREEK TO RECEIVE A NOBEL PRIZE.

    FILM SHOWS SEFERIS -- HE WRITES UNDER THAT NAME, ALTHOUGH DURING HIS DIPLOMATIC CAREER HE WAS KNOWN AS GEORGE SEFERIADIS -- WITH HIS WIFE AT THEIR HOME IN THE ATHENS SUBURG OF PANGRATI, JUST BEHIND THE PILLARS OF THE OLYMPIAN ZEUS.

    THE CITATION SAID THE AWARD WAS "FOR HIS EMINENT LYRICAL WRITING, INSPIRED BY A DEEP FEELING FOR THE HELLENIC WORLD OF CULTURE." THE PRIZE IS WORTH GBP18,280 AND WILL BE PRESENTED IN STOCKHOLM ON DECEMBER 10 BY KING GUSTAV.

    SEFERIS WAS BORN IN TURKEY IN 1900 AND IMMIGRATED TO ATHENS WITH HIS PARENTS WHILE STILL A CHILD. AFTER GRADUATING IN LAW FROM THE PARIS SORBONNE IN 1924, HE ENTERED THE GREEK DIPLOMATIC SERVICE. HE SERVED IN TURKEY, LEBANON, SYRIA, JORDAN, IRAQ AND LONDON. HE RETIRED LAST YEAR WITH RANK OF AMBASSADOR.

    HE NOW LIVES IN A SMALL, ONE-STOREY FAMILY VILLA, AND DEVOTES MOST OF HIS TIME WRITING IN HIS BOOK-LINED STUDIO, AND COLLECTING SEA-SHELLS.
