Background: Tokyo, March 21st, 1975 - The Cambridge University rugby team met Waseda University, japanese Collegiate champion, today at national Stadium in Tokyo. This is the first game of a four-match tour of Cambridge University rugby team in Japan.
Cambridge last toured japan in 1953 when it won all eight games, while a combined Oxford-Cambridge side won all its six matches in 1959. But since then, particularly in last five or six years Japanese rugby made vast improvements.
However, the soft ground due to heavy rain in previous night works against the lighter japanese Forwards. Cambridge beat Waseda, 52-3. At half time, Cambridge led 19-0. Rugby was first introduced to Japan in 1899 by English University lecturer in Tokyo. Japanese Rugby Football Union was formed in 1926 and recent years the game has become one of the most popular in winter sports in the country.
In the other three matches, Cambridge will meet an All-Japan student side in Nagoya next monday, a Nippon Steel Corporation team in Kita-Kyushu on March 26 and all-Japan team in Tokyo on March 30. The Japanese national Team toured Wales and England in 1973 and plans another visit to Britain next year.
