Background: While a London-based international study group for the proposed Channel Tunnel linking the UK and France favour solely the use of electric passenger and freight trains, a study group in France led by the National Highways Union (Union Routiere Francaise) meeting in Paris Mar 18 proposed a tunnel for both rail and road use.

Under its President Georges Galienne, the Union presented a number of plans to newscameramen ranging from the incorporation in the tunnel of power lines for electricity supplies, telecommunications and eventually an oil pipeline to a bridge across the Channel.

The Union, unlike the London study group, bel??? the problem of ventilation could be overcome for the road tunnel by a special system of aeration from air wells set up on the French side. In view of the increase of European road transport, the Union believed a road route under the Channel was imperat. The London study group favour the transport of cars and trucks by freight trains.
