Chien Sung-yen is seventy nine years old and he has painted with the Chinese brush for over 60 years. Although advanced in age, his works retain the spring and power of the art.
Chien Sung-yen is a master of traditional brush-work. His penchant for new techniques gives his works an originality unmatched by his contemporaries.
He has painted more than a thousand Chinese inks since 1949, which come in six volumes. His works have been exhibited in Peking, Tientsin and Nanking, as well as in ten countries in Asia, Europe and the Americas.
These four scrolls of flowers and birds show the fine craftsmanship of his early works.
As one of the early proponents who introduced real life to traditional Chinese painting, his works respond to the life and struggle of the labouring people and pulsate with the march of the times.
He is best at landscapes. 'Verdant Cypress on Mount Taishan' was made in 1959.
