Background: IT'S REPORTED FROM SWEDEN TONIGHT (FRIDAY) THAT NO AGREEMENT HAS YET BEEN REACHED ON THE MAIN ISSUES AT THE MEETING OF THE IO RICHEST COUNTRIES OF THE INTERNATIONAL MONETARY FUND WHICH BEGAN IN A STOCKHOLD HOTEL EARLIER TODAY. WHILE THE DELEGATES WERE MEETING IN CONFERENCE, DEMONSTRATORS PROTESTING AGAINST THE VIETNAM WAR TRIED TO REACH THE HOTEL AND WERE DRIVEN OFF BY POLICE WIELDING THRUNCHEONS.

AFTER THE FIRST FIVE-HOUR MEETING OF THE FINANCE MINISTERS OF THE SO-CALLED "GROUP OF TEN" LEADING FOREIGN MINISTER DAMPENED EARLIER OPTIMISM THAT THE CONFERENCE WAS ON THE VERGE OF QUICK AGREEMENT WHEN HE ATTENDED A PRESS CONFERENCE. THE MAIN ISSUES AT THE CONFERENCE INCLUDE A NEW INTERNATIONAL MONETARY RESERVE AND THE QUESTION OF A WIDER REFORM OF THE INTERNATIONAL MONETARY (IMF). THERE WILL BE A FURTHER SESSION TOMORROW.

ABOUT 200 DEMONSTRATORS - MOST OF THEM STUDENTS - TODAY TRIED TO REACH THE MOTEL WHERE THE CONFERENCE WAS BEING HELD. THEY SHOUTED" "U.S. MURDERERS -- GET OUT OF SWEDEN", AND CARRIED PLACARDS SAYING" "CRUSH THE DOLLAR -- STOP THE GENOCIDE". POLICE USED THEIR BATONS WHEN THE DEMONSTRATORS CONTINUED TO PRESS FORWARD. IS A 20 MINUTE BATTLE WITH THE DEMONSTRATORS, THE POLICE MADE 15 ARRESTS.
