Background: On Thursday (20 June), two people died in a rail level crossing accident on the outskirts of Kaduna, the capital of Nigeria's North Central State. The vehicles involved were a motor lorry and a goods train. One of the people killed was the driver of the lorry, the other was a railway employee.

Eight rail wagons, including two fuel tankers, were derailed in the accident. However, the two diesel engines pulling the train were only slightly damaged. The track was ripped up in the derailment and inspectors on the scene said the damage would take several days to repair.

Fuel from the tankers poured on to the roadway, disrupting traffic. And all flights from the nearby airport were suspended because of the danger of fire and explosions. As well, many passenger and goods train services were cancelled.

Railway inspectors and engineers were soon on the scene to investigate the cause of the derailment, and supervise repair work. They said this would take several days.

A number of passenger and goods train services were cancelled because of the incident, which occurred at one of the State's most important crossings.

It was the second major disruption to Nigeria's rail services in a month, Earlier, industrial disputes caused problems for passengers and people with freight to send by rail.
