  • Description

EXTERIOR BUILDING: STATUE: SPOKESMAN FOR BISHOPS SPEAKING.

TRANSCRIPT: SPOKESMAN: "ON THE 19TH OF JANUARY AT MIDNIGHT THE DUTCH BISHOPS' CONFERENCE DELIVERED A DECLARATION WHICH I'M GOING TO READ YOU NOW. THE FIFTH PLENARY ASSEMBLY OF THE DUTCH COUNCIL HAS MADE CLEAR THE OPINION OF A SUBSTANTIAL PART OF THE CHURCH COMMUNITY IN THE NETHERLANDS AS TO THE JUNCTION OF CELIBACY AND PRIESTHOOD. THE BISHOPS ALSO KNOW THAT ANOTHER PART OF THIS COMMUNITY HOLDS A DIFFERENT VIEW. THEY HOPE THAT THE WHOLE COMMUNITY OF THE FAITHFUL WILL SHOW UNDERSTANDING OF THIS COMPLICATED SITUATION, IN WHICH THE BISHOPS STAND AS PASTORS OF THEIR WHOLE FLOCK. THE BISHOPS THINK THAT THEIR CHURCH COMMUNITY WOULD BE BETTER OFF WHEN, BESIDES A CLEARLY FREE CHOSEN CELIBATE PRIESTHOOD, MARRIED PRIESTS WOULD BE ADMITTED INTO THE LATIN CHURCH, THAT IS WHEN MARRIED PEOPLE COULD BE ORDAINED AS PRIESTS, AND WHEN, IN SPECIAL CASES AND UNDER CERTAIN CONDITIONS, PRIESTS WHO HAVE MARRIED COULD RETURN TO THE MINISTRY. BUT NO SINGLE CHURCH PROVINCE WILL BE ABLE TO CARRY THIS OUT ALONE, WITHOUT CONSULTING WITH THE HOLY FATHER AND THE WORLD CHURCH. A DELIBERATION OF THE WHOLE CHURCH ABOUT SUCH IMPORTANT AND URGENT MATTERS THAT REGARD THE WHOLE CHURCH, WILL CERTAINLY BE BENEFICIAL FOR THE CHURCH. THE BISHOPS WANT TO ACT IN COMMUNITY WITH THE HOLY FATHER AND TO CONSULT WITH HIM ABOUT THE INTERESTS OF THE CHURCH IN THE NETHERLANDS. BEFORE LONG CARDINAL ALFRINK WILL GET INTO TOUCH WITH THE HOLY FATHER IN ORDER TO INFORM HIM ABOUT WHAT IS LIVING HERE AND IN ORDER TO DISCUSS WITH HIM WHAT, IN THIS SITUATION, MUST BE DONE FOR THE BENEFIT OF THE CHURCH."

Background: IT APPEARS UNLIKELY THAT THE VATICAN WILL ALLOW THE ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCH IN HOLLAND TO BECOME A TEST CASE OVER THE ISSUE OF COMPULSORY CELIBACY FOR PRIESTS. A RECENT CONFERENCE OF HOLLAND'S BISHOPS DECIDED TO PRESS FOR THE ABOLITION OF THE CHURCH'S RULING.

A SPOKESMAN FOR THE BISHOPS SAID IN UTRETCH TODAY (MONDAY) THAT IT WAS WELL KNOWN WITHIN HOLLAND'S ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCH THAT THE COMMUNITY WAS DIVIDED OVER THE ISSUE...BUT IT WAS ALSO KNOWN THAT THE CHURCH WAS ALSO DIVIDED.

OBSERVERS IN HOLLAND SAY IT IS UNLIKELY THAT THE VATICAN WILL ALLOW THE COUNTRY TO BECOME A TEST CASE...BUT IT IS POSSIBLE THAT IT MAY TRY TO REACH A COMPROMISE.

EXPLAINING THE BISHOPS' DECISION THE SPOKESMAN SAID:
