    Background: DURBAN, SOUTH AFRICA

INTRODUCTION: Australian surfer Cheyne Horan won the Gunston International competition in Durban, South Africa last Sunday (5 July). He beat into second place the local hope Mark Potter, just fifteen years old. Tying for third place were Hawaii's Dane Kealoha and another South African surfer, Mark Price. The competition is part of the world championship series and attracted most of the tops surfers.

SYNOPSIS: South Africans have been starved of many opportunities to watch the world's best sportsmen. So they turned out in their thousands when 13 of the world's surfers ignored the international ban on competition in their country.

One member of the surfing elite eager for championship points was young Cheyne Horan, wearing the traditional gold colours, of Australian sportsmen. And Mark Potter now ranked with the best despite his somewhat tender years.

In addition to the points was the prize money. The Gunston is now the second richest event on the international calendar. But before young Mark Potter could even contemplate picking up a share, there were the giant waves of Durban beach to conquer.

In the final with his was Horan. Having watched the young South African complete a successful run Horan knew how far he would have to stretch himself to secure first place and those precious championship points.

It was another high quality piece of surfing from the 20-years-old, who hails from Australia's famed Bondi Beach and has been one of his country's most consistent competitors over the last two years.

The judges thought Horan was the better man. But they and the spectators seemed to agree both men were excellent at their sport.
