Background: Investigators are trying to determine the cause of a freight train derailment that led to the crash of two other trains near Yokohama in Japan on Saturday (9 November). By the latest count, 163 persons died in the crash and 71 were injured.
A passenger train speeding from Yokohama toward Tokyo smashed into the derailed freight, then leaped the tracks and plowed into another passenger train coming from Tokyo.
The President of Japan National Railways resigned to assume responsibility for the disaster, but his resignation was not accepted. He was told instead to take steps to prevent a recurrence.
The train wreck followed by only six hours a mine explosion in Japan's biggest coal mine that took 451 lives.
