Background: The grave site was on a hilltop overlooking the Palace. Few foreign leaders had time to reach Amman for the ceremony. The only head-of-state to do so was President Hafez al-Assad of Syria. Only three days earlier he had played host to the King and Queen when they had visited Damascus. Also present was the West German Foreign Minister, Hans-Dietrich Genscher, who flew from Damascus to represent his country.
About four thousand vehicles had followed the cortege as the Queen's subjects paid their last tribute. Queen Alia's romance with King Hussein had begun during a water skiing contest at Aqaba where the King has a seaside villa. Before her marriage, she had worked in public relations for Jordanian Airlines. She was buried in the grounds of the Palace the King had built for her only four months ago.
