Background: There has been a massive show of support in Santiago for Chilean President Salvadore Allende. Tens of thousands of people paraded past the Meneda Presidential Palace on Tuesday (4 September), celebrating the third anniversary of the President's election. Dr. Allende greeted the mass of supporters from a rostrum in front of the palace.
The parade was seen as a great morale booster for the President, whose Government has been plagued by industrial and economic chaos. The surge of public support for him began to build up on Monday (3 September). A crowd gathered outside the palace, awaiting the President's arrival. They chanted for him, and he stopped briefly to chat with them - always watched by a heavy guard of detectives.
Later the same day, the funeral procession for a Communist student and a workman moved through one of the city's main streets. They were killed in a road accident while voluntarily delivering food to people, hard hit by the lorry owner's strike. The stoppage began on July 26. Since then, there have been more than 500 acts of terrorism, in which seven people have been killed.
SYNOPSIS: Public support for Chile's President Salvadore Allende began to build up on Monday... in preparation for a massive election anniversary celebration, the following day. A crowd gathered outside the Moneda Presidential Palace, awaiting Doctor Allende. When he arrived, they chanted for him, and he stopped briefly to chat with them.
Later in the day, there was another significant pointer to the events which were to follow. Scores of people gathered for the funeral of Guillermo Godoy Ramirez, president of the Young Scientific Association.
Ramirez...and a workman...were killed in a road accident, while delivering food to people affected by the six-week-old lorry owners' strike.
The funeral procession passed through Santiago's city centre. A large picture of the dead youth was carried by young members of the Communist Party, who surrounded the coffin.
The procession was one of the peaceful incidents relation back to the strike by lorry owners, which began on 26 July. There have also been some five hundred incidents of terrorism. They have claimed seven lives.
The strike has contributed to the industrial and economic chaos which now confronts President Allende's Government. So, the parade on Tuesday by tens of thousands of Allende supporters, celebrating the third anniversary of his election, was seen as a great boost to the President's morale.
