Background: The diet of the U.S. soldier stationed in Vietnam is being augmented by fresh vegetables and fruits grown by Vietnamese farmers. The U.S. Army's 1st Logistical Command is responsible for the inspection and purchase of the fresh fruits and vegetables from Vietnamese farmers in the Dalat area.
From Dalat, the produce is shipped by rail to Phan Rang where it is placed on shipping pallets and airlifted by C-130 aircraft to destination points throughout the Republic of Vietnam.
By purchasing fresh produce from Vietnamese farmers, the Army local purchase policy is helping the local people to help themselves. Aside from produce sales, new industries - such as construction of the wooden crates in which much of the produce is shipped - are being created and new fields are being opened for cultivation.
Plans call for similar local purchase programs in the Saigon and the delta areas of South Vietnam.
