Background: A Chicago memorial concert for the late, great jazz trumpeter Louis Armstrong took a tragic turn on Thursday. Satchmo's second wife, Lil, collapsed and died of a heart attack while swinging through St. Louis Blues with several other pioneer jazz musicians.
Lil and Louis married in 1924, the year after Satchmo first came to Chicago. She worked with him, encouraged him and taught him to read music. Seven years later the couple separated. Though they divorced in 1938, Lil Armstrong continued to use her married name just as she went on pounding out jazz rhythms, composing and recording.
This National Broadcasting Company film of Lil's last concert is introduced by a brief commentary, transcribed overleaf, and has natural sound of the music and the subsequent chaos.
