Background: More than 2,000 workers from four textile mills in a central Thai province staged a demonstration in Bangkok, Thailand over the weekend, demanding higher wages and better working conditions.

The workers from Samuth Sakhon Province, 30 miles (48 kms) east of Bangkok, also asked that workers laid off by the factories due to the go-slow last month be reinstated.

A leader of the workers, who demonstrated outside the Labour Department, claimed that several labour groups were ready to join in their protest if mill owners and the Thai Government did not come up with a major concession.

The demonstration, which began on Saturday (8 June), ended peacefully on Sunday (9 June) when the government agreed to consider the protesters' demands.

The protest is the first major demonstration since Prime Minister Sanya Dharmasakti formed his new government 11 days ago. Mr. Sanya resigned over criticism of his previous administration for not dealing firmly with spiralling inflation, a rising crime rate and student and labour unrest.
