Background: Political chief of the Palestine Liberation Organisation (PLO) Mr. Faruq Khaddumi arrived in Ankara o Tuesday (14 August) to formally establish diplomatic ties with Turkey.
SYNOPSIS: Ankara airport was patrolled by armed guards in preparation for Mr. Khaddumi's arrival -- the Turkish authorities were anxious to avoid any risks following the drama last July when Palestine guerrillas seized the Egyptian Embassy, and held fourteen people hostage, including the Ambassador. Mr. Khaddumi was greeted on arrival by Foreign Minister Gunduz Okcun. Turkey claimed its apparently sudden decision to allow the establishment of a PLO bureau in Ankara has nothing to do with the PLO's help in ending the July siege, but stems from a resolution taken at the 1976 Islamic Foreign Ministers Conference. The PLO has already been recognised by one hundred and four countries. Mr. Khaddumi said relations with Turkey were of particular importance to Palestinians as Turkey was part of the Middle East.
