Background: Well-known French artist, Victor Vasarely, has presented one of his sculptures to Hungary. It is one of his latest geometric creations which will be kept in the small village of Pecs.
SYNOPSIS: The artist was born in Pecs in 1908, and last year the townspeople made his home into a museum. It contains some of Vasarely's early works.
Now there has been the addition of the artist's latest gift, a sculpture that takes pride of place near the museum. It is four metres high, and is made from ceramics produced at a porcelain factory in Pecs. Vasarely believes artists must co-operate with others to help form the human environment; and that art should be for all to enjoy.
A ceremony held to mark the arrival of the sculpture was attended by a large crowd.
Although he was educated in Hungary Vasarely settled in France nearly 50 years ago. He had originally studied medicine but later gave that up in favour of his artwork. He is now permanently represented in some of the world's top galleries.
