Background: One of Sydney's proudest new landmarks -- the new bridge at Gladesville -- was officially opened today by Princess Marina, Duchess of Kent. This was one of Princess Marina's main engagements in her visit to Sydney. Here -- as elsewhere in her tour of Sydney -- the Princess was received warmly by the people who had gathered to see her. First, there was a quard of honour, provided by more than one hundred senior students of the nearly Riverside High School.
The Premier the New South Wales, Mr. Renshaw, accompanies the Princess as she walks to the dais for the official opening ceremony.
As he said in his speech of welcome, Mr. Renshaw told how the new Gladesville Bridge -- like the Sydney Harbour Bridge -- was a product of the technical cooperation between Australia and britain. So it was fitting that the bridge was to be opened by Princess Marina. For the ceremony, the Princess was wearing a pine green silk dress and coat, with a feather hat of black and white. Her accessories were in black...
In her speech officially opening the bridge, Princess Marina referred to the partnerships of britain and Australia. Here's part of the speech by Princess Marina today
Then with a pair of scissors handed to her by the Minister of Highways, Mr. Hills, Princess Marina ceremonially cut the ribbon and formally opened the Gladesville Bridge. With the bridged open, Princess Marina was then driven across to see the view from the centre with its commanding panorama over much of Sydney...
Not only is it a commanding and sweeping structure, the bridge is an important in a new highways system that will link Sydney's western and northern suburbs. The bridge was a feat of engineering conception and execution, which -- as Mr. Renshaw pointed out -- has already received world wide attention.
The bridge cross one thousand feet of water, and at its center stands 135 feet above the water. From that point is a view of Sydney that's been hidden from eight -- and one that will soon be familiar to many thousands of motorists in Sydney. Princess Marina was one of the first to take advantage of the new view....
The Sydney Harbour Bridge still dominates the Sydney skyline -- but in grace and beauty, the Gladesville Bridge may attract more attention in future. This was but one engagement for the Princess today. This afternoon more than one-thousand women packed the Trocadero whern Princess Marina attended a reception given by the War Widors' Guild. In spite of the uncomfortable sticky heat, the Princess moved into the crowd, chatting informally with Guild leaders cattered throughout the hall.
