Background: HEAVY RAINS WHICH BEGAN A WEEK AGO HAVE BROUGHT SERIOUS FLOODING IN AND AROUND MONTGOMERY, CAPITAL OF THE STATE OF ALABAMA. THE CITY IS CLOSE TO THE CONFLUENCE OF THE COOSA AND TOMBIGBEE RIVERS WHICH TOGETHER FORM THE ALABAMA RIVER, DRAINING MOST OF THE STATE. FLOOD CONDITIONS ON THE ALABAMA ARE REACHED WHEN THE HEIGHT OF THE RIVER TOUCHES 35 FEET. YESTERDAY (FRIDAY) THE SURGING FLOODWATERS OF THE ALABAMA RIVER WERE SLOPPING BEYOND THE 52 FOOT MARK.

THE SUBURBS AND COUNTRYSIDE NORTH OF MONTGOMERY HAVE BEEN INUNDATED. ONE THOUSAND PEOPLE HAVE BEEN EVACUATED, MOST OF THEM TO THE HOMES OF RELATIVES AND FRIENDS, BUT SOME TO TEMPORARY SHELTERS SET UP BY THE RED CROSS AND THE ALABAMA NATIONAL GUARD. THE ONLY CASUALTY SO FAR HAS BEEN A NINE-YEAR-OLD BOY WHO DROWNED IN A FLOODED DRAINAGE DITCH.

NEIGHBOURING GEORGIA IS ALSO FEELING THE EFFECTS OF THE HEAVY RAIN. THE CHATTAHOOCHEE RIVER WHICH IS THE BOUNDARY BETWEEN THE TWO STATES HAS BURST ITS BANKS, INUNDATING PART OF GEORGIA.
