Background: Australia have retained the World Rugby League Cup by beating the favourites, Great Britain. In a final, often marred by rough play, Australia defeated Britain 12 points to seven.
In the first half the play was unadventurous, and Britain scored first from a penalty kick. Australia soon followed with a penalty and a try.
It was in the second half that the game opened up and the rough incidents occurred. Britain failed with an attempted drop goal, and Australia took the advantage, scoring a decisive try and making the conversion.
There were some ugly incidents at the final whistle as a number of players gave vent to anger built up during the match. The referee, police and officials of both teams ran onto the pitch to break up the melee.
