Background: The Ma'alot massacre of schoolchildren carried out by three members of the Popular Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine (P.D.F.L.P.), was staged to demonstrate Palestinian rejection of Dr. Henry Kissinger's attempts to liquidate the Palestine case. This was stated by Mr. Nayef Hawatmeh, Secretary-General of the P.D.F.L.P. at a press conference in Beirut, Lebanon on Thursday (16 May).
Mr. Hawatheh accused the U.S. Secretary of State of seeking a Middle East settlement that would mean the surrender of the Palestinian people.
He blamed the Israelis for the bloody outcome of the operation, in which the 27 death toll of Israelis is still rising. Three guerrillas were also killed and more than 70 other children were wounded.
The guerrillas chief said "the language of arms and logic" had been used to show the Israelis that their leadership could not offer protection against the "blows of our people". Israel, he added, refused to meet the demands of the Palestinian people and continued its expansionist policy.
Also at the press conference was Yassar Awad Rabbi, official spokesman of the P.D.F.L.P. Behind the table at which the guerrilla leaders sat during the news conference were photographs of the three dead Ma'alot attackers. Speaking in Arabic, as did Mr. Hawatmeh, Mr. Rabbi told newsmen how the commando operation had been mounted.
Mr. Rabbi insisted that he Ma'alot students were not shot before Israeli forces attacked. He said the only demand was for the release of 26 Prisoners.
