    Background: Thai Royal Air Force Commander-in-Chief, Marshal Chalermkiat Watanangura, and his wife, were among 18 people killed when a Thai Air Force C-54 passenger plane crashed into a mountain near Taipei, Formosa, Apr 15, 3 minutes after taking off.

    The four-engine plane, loaded with Thai and Chinese Nationalist military officials returning from the third Pacific Air Commanders' Conference, in Taipei, veered off course and crashed into Mount Wu Tze; impact of the crash was so great that one of the plane's wings was found on a neighbouring hill.

    All eight members of the plane's crew were killed in the accident.
