Background: This is the Nagayevo Harbor, the sea outlet to the Soviet Far Eastern area of Magadan.
Early in the spring the sea-animal hunting flotilla of the Far East left from here to look for seals in the infinite expanses of the Sea of Okhotsk.
They were shooting animals for several months on ice-floes of the sea.
The results of a hunt depend largely on the accuracy of the shots-- the animals mist be killed with one shot, because wounded seal will slide down the ice-floe and drown...
And here is the flotilla back in the Nagayevo Harbor.
Aboard the 8 schooners are 90,000 or so skins of the valuable animal. The flotilla is 30 years old, and since its foundation Vasili Kudra has been sailing on it, first as a sailor and now as its chief.
The hunt during the jubilee year was particular good, he says.
It is likely that this pelt, which is being processed by Sailor Nikolai Chervonenko, will be used by some beautiful woman to warm herself in the coming winter.
Thousands of people around the world will wear attractive clothes of seal skins, which were brought by Soviet animal hunters in the jubilee year.
The work of these courageous people is not easy. But they are happy with its results.
