  • Description

THE NEWEST OFFICERS IN THE BRITISH ARMY ARE TONIGHT (THURSDAY), PREPARING TO JOIN THEIR UNITS AS JUNIOR COMMANDERS. EARLIER TODAY, 75 OF THEM STAGED A PASSING OUT PARADE FROM THE MONS OFFICER CADET SCHOOL AT ALDERSHOT, IN HAMPSHIRE, WHERE FOR THE PAST 20 WEEKS THEY'VE BEEN UNDERGOING AN INTENSIVE COURSE TO FIT THEM AS OFFICERS.

THE PARADE IS THE FINAL DUTY PERFORMED BY THE CADETS, WHICH THIS TIME INCLUDED SOME 21 MEMBERS OF THE DEFENCE FORCES OF COMMONWEALTH AND FRIENDLY COUNTRIES IN AFRICA AND THE MIDDLE EAST.

MOST OF THE GRADUATES OF MONS OFFICER CADET SCHOOL, WHICH WAS FOUNDED IN 1940, WILL ONLY SERVE UNDER SHORT TERM COMMISSIONS. ALL THE GRADUATES HAVE ALREADY BEEN ASSIGNED TO THEIR UNITS, MAINLY REGIMENTS OF THE LINE AND WILL BEGIN THEIR DUTIES IMMEDIATELY.

FOR THE OVERSEAS STUDENTS, REPRESENTING KENYA, THE SOUTH ARABIAN FEDERATION, SIERRA LEONE, TANGANYIKA, THE TRUCIAL OMAN, KUWAIT AND JAMAICA, IT WILL MEAN HOME AND A PLACE IN THE DEFENCE FORCES OF THEIR OWN COUNTRIES.

BEFORE THE COMMISSIONING COMPANY MARCHED OFF, SIR GORDON LENNOX PRESENTED PRIZES TO THE MOST SUCCESSFUL CADETS ON THE COURSE. THE SILVER MOUNTED SWAGGER STICK FOR THE SENIOR UNDER OFFICER, WAS PRESENTED TO R.J.S. WARDLE, WHO'LL JOIN THE COLDSTREAM GUARDS AS A SECOND LIEUTENANT.
