Background: Despite a widespread improvement of the strike situation in Belgium, certain areas still persist in their campaign against the "Loi Unique"- the Government Austerity Bill. In Charleroi January 20, some 6 thousand people gathered to hear a speech at the local steel plant.

Following the address- urging them to continue the strike - the workers marched to the prison in protect against fellow strikers who were imprisonment there.

It was expected that trades union leaders of the Walloon provinces of Belgium - where strikes are still continuing in the metal industry and the mines- would meet in Namur Jan. 21. The Government hoped that the last strikes would be over on Jan 23.
