Mexico's Gabriel Bernal snatched the World Boxing Council (WBC) flyweight title in Tokyo on April 9. Bernal knocked down defending champion Koji Kobayashi of Japan after two minutes, 37 seconds in the second of 12 scheduled rounds. In his first title attempt, Bernal had knocked down the defender with left and right hooks earlier in the same round before flooring him again with a hard right. It was Kobayashi's first defence of the title he won in Tokyo in January. The win was Bernal's 38th, which includes 25 knockouts, compared to the seven defeats and three draws of his career. The result was Kobayashi's second defeat against 21 wins and three draws.
