Background: Dr. Erhard, West German Vice Chancellor and Economics Minister, arrived at London Airport, June 9, on his return to Germany from the United States, where he had cut short his visit by one day. (His aircraft had hydraulic trouble, and was towed across the Airport runway.)
He was widely regarded as Dr. Adenauer's successor until Dr. Adenauer recently announced his decision to continue as Chancellor. Dr. Erhard's departure from America a day early followed criticism from within the Christian Democratic party of Dr. Adenauer's decision.
At the Airport, Dr. Erhard was met by the West German Ambassador in London, and was also expected to meet the chief Press Officer of the West German Economic Ministry, Dr. Hohmann, who flew to London June 8.
A Cabinet meeting on June 10 was probably to provide the first chance of an encounter between Dr. Adenauer and Dr. Erhard. Dr. Erhard was expected to have talks with Dr. Gerstenmaier, President of the West German Lower House, (who quarrelled briefly with Dr. Adenauer June 8(and with Christian Democratic Deputies supporting him soon after his arrival in Germany.
