Background: By night, Taipei becomes another city. Soft lights rub off the rough edges. Romance blossoms and people relax from the cares of the day. Neon beckoned and thousands set forth in quest of something new. On Taiwan movies are the favourite form of low-cost public entertainment. This is the movie "When you will come Again." Shopping is fun, especially at the street stalls. You can buy cheaper here than in the stores. But remember, if you don't bargain, you'll pay more.
Department stores are becoming popular...big stocks and no bargaining. This is the First Department Store in downtown Taipei. Prices are fixed.
This is the Central Theatre Restaurant. Taipei has three such establishment serving excellent Chinese food and presenting top foreign and Chinese floor shows. This is the Hoover Theatre Restaurant, the newest big night spot. Shows last an hour or more. Hot music is popular with Taipei's younger set. Young lovers often enjoy classical music and tea. So it is at this tea house of the Ambassador Hotel.
Older people may prefer a more familiar noise -- that Chinese opera. In the evening rehearsals my be opened to the public. Some people like chess, Chinese chess, of course -- and it's quite a game.
Billiards were introduced a few years ago and are increasingly popular.
Bowling is going over big with young generation. Girls are organizing their own leagues for competition.
Night is for education, too. These young man and women are learning use of the Chinese typewriter. After six months of training, they can seek an office job. Many night schools teach academic subjects to those who couldn't finished their formal education. Attending such classes are clerks, secretaries -- even nuns. This is a Chinese language class. Here is a library open until at night.
In the family circle, children are busy at homework in the evening. If they finish on time, they may join their parents for a little television before bedtime.
