    Background: MOSCOW, USSR

The "Spring Swallows" world diving tournament has been taking place in Moscow, with divers from 17 countries competing at the Olympic Sporting Centre. The tournament is the traditional start of the diving season. The men's final was off the 10 metre platform. In the early stages, the battle for fist place was closely fought between two Russians, Vladimir Aleynik -- the eventual winner -- and David Amburtsumyan, who finished third. On the sixth dive Aleynik scored highly with an armstand double somersault. Final placings weren't known until the last dive. The season culminates with the world Championships in Ecuador from July the 30th to August the 8th.
