Background: Outspoken right-wing Governor George Wallace of Alabama was shot and critically wounded during a political rally in Maryland today (Monday). Mr. Wallace, campaigning for the Democratic Presidential nomination, was rushed to hospital after being wounded by three bullets -- one slug lodged near his spinal column was causing doctors concern as they prepared for an emergency operation.
Police detained a 21-year-old white man after the shooting. They were also searching for a second suspect.
Governor Wallace is a man whose extreme views have attracted vehement reaction throughout his political career. Our library film shows him confronted by some pretty antagonistic crowds at two rallies in Wisconsin during the 1968 Presidential campaign.
Governor Wallace is an avowed segregationist who during the current primaries has succeeded in capturing increasing support outside the American Deep South. As an independent candidate in the 1968 Presidential election, Mr. Wallace won 13.5 per cent of the popular vote fighting the party machines of the Republicans and Democrats. It was the highest total ever secured by a third party candidate in U.S. political history.
This year, he scored a resounding success in the Florida primary and made good showings in several northern states.
At the end of today's campaign speech, Governor Wallace stopped from his bullet-proof platform to shake hands with supporters in the crowd. An eyewitness said that one man pushed a gun into the Governor's stomach and fired at point-blank range.
