Background: President Saragat of Italy has asked the country's caretaker Prime Minister, Signor Mariano Rumor, to try to form another government. The 54-year-old Christian Democrat led the two previous government's and has been caretaker Prime Minister since his minority government resigned a week ago.
He has been asked to try to form a four-party coalition government from his Christian Democrats and the Socialists, Social Democrats and Republicans.
Signor Rumor has not formally accepted the mandate from President Saragat to form a government but is waiting to see what his chances will be of forming a coalition. He is expected to start talks with other parties shortly in an attempt to solve the country's political crisis, but the negotiations are likely to be difficult ones.
