TRANSCRIPT: JONES (SEQ. 3): "The complacency of the Government about these price increases is in sharp contrast with their election promises. The White Paper is clearly based or the cynical calculation that there will be cuts in living standards if we join. I hope this Union will say today that the future of the British people, so vital to the peace and prosperity of the world, must not be sacrificed to a mania to get into the Common Market on terms which are unfair to the ordinary people of Britain. And if we so decide, in support of the motion before you, then my recommendation certainly would be to our Executive to start a campaign right away to try to counter the lying propaganda which is coming from the Government on this question."

Background: Britain's largest trade union, the three-million-member Transport and General Workers Union, today (July 14) voted against Britain joining the Common Market. The vote, taken at the union's two-yearly conference, underlines general union hostility throughout the country on the issue. The conference also urged the Trades Union Congress -- representing nine million workers -- and the opposition labour Party to conduct a public campaign against Common Market entry. The TGWU leader, Mr Jack Jones, who addressed the conference and urged members to vote against Common Market entry, said later he expected a similar vote from delegates at the Labour Party special conference on Europe on Saturday (July 17).
