Background: INTRODUCTION: In Portugal, a group of young people have claimed a world record -- for the number they managed to squeeze, at once, into a small car.
SYNOPSIS: The car was a British-made Austin Mini. It has the reputation of being sturdy. It needed to be last Sunday (March 15th) to withstand the assault of all these girls and young men.
It is designed by the manufacturers to seat four. Most passengers find that fairly cramped, at least for a long journey. But five .. six ... seven ... and still they come.
A second layer on the knees of the first could be called merely sociable. That accounts for eight. After that, it becomes a matter of sheer ingenuity. A common description of tight packing is "like sardines". The Portuguese know about sardines.
Twenty-five inside .. two more as excess baggage ... if the back shuts. It does. Grand total: 27. No-one really knows whether this is a world record or not. But it would certainly be hard to beat.
