Background: An Argentine economist, Raul Prebisch, was presented with India's highest award - the Jawaharlal Nehru Award for International Understanding - in Hew Delhi on Monday (26 April).

The presentation was made by India's President, Fakhruddin Alk Ahmed, in the presence of Prime Minister, Mrs. Indira Gandhi.

The award was first made in 1965, in tribute to the late Indian Prime Minister, Shri Jawaharlal Nehru. It is given to those people considered to have promoted international understanding throughout the world and previous winners have included Zambia's President Kaunda and yugoslavia's President Tito.

Dr. Praebisch was presented with the award for "his role in narrowing the economic distances between countries". The citation went on to speak of his work as Secretary-General of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD). It said that Dr. Prebisch guided the UNCTAD in its formative stages and forged the unity of developing countries - the so-called Group of 77.
