    TRANSCRIPT: KENNEDY: "WE ARE VERY GLAD TO HAVE YOU HERE, MR PRESIDENT, SO YOU CAN SEE SOMETHING OF THE UNITED STATES. AND I'M GLAD TO YOUR GOING TO THE SOUTH, AND THEN TO THE WEST. THIS IS A VIGOROUS AND PROGRESSIVE PEOPLE YOU WILL SEE. NATURE HAS BEEN VERY GENEROUS TO US. AND I THINK THAT YOUR VISIT HERE...BUT I'M SURE YOU WILL BE WARMLY AND HOSPITABLY TREATED AND WELCOMED AND GIVE YOU A GREATER UNDERSTANDING OF THE POLICIES, OBJECTIVES AND MEANING OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. THIS VISIT IS VERY WELCOME, VERY GLAD TO HAVE YOU HERE AT THE WHITE HOUSE AND I HOPE AS THE RESULT OF YOUR VISIT THAT THE RELATIONS BETWEEN OUR TWO PEOPLES WILL BECOME STRONGER, AND THAT OUR DIFFERENCES OF NATIONAL INDEPENDENCE WILL BE STRENGTHENED (?). MR PRESIDENT, WE ARE VERY GLAD TO WELCOME YOU, YOUR WIFE, MEMBERS OF THE GOVERNMENT TO THE WHITE HOUSE."



    TITO (PARAPHRASED): "IT HAS ALWAYS BEEN THE DESIRE OF THE GOVERNMENT OF YUGOSLAVIA TO MAINTAIN GOOD AND FRIENDLY RELATIONS WITH THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. I AM PLEASED, MR PRESIDENT, THAT YOU SHALL RETURN THE VISIT. I BELIEVE OUR FRIENDSHIP WILL CONSTITUTE AUTHORITY AND STABILITY. I LOOK FORWARD TO A FRANK EXCHANGE OF VIEWS, AND I HOPE RELATIONS WITH THE WEST WILL BE STRENGTHENED. I THANK YOU, MR PRESIDENT, AND CONVEY THE FRIENDLY GREETINGS OF THE PEOPLE OF YUGOSLAVIA TO THE PEOPLE OF THE U.S.A.".

    Background: PRESIDENT TITO OF YUGOSLAVIA PUT OFF HIS DEPARTURE FOR CALIFORNIA TODAY (FRIDAY) FOLLOWING A LIGHT ATTACK OF INFLUENZA. HE IS STAYING AT A PRIVATE HOME AT WILLIAMSBURG, VIRGINIA. IT WAS STATED HE WOULD SPEND ALL TODAY AT WILLIAMSBURG.

    HIS ILLNESS COMES LESS THAN 24 HOURS AFTER BEING WELCOMED TO WASHINGTON YESTERDAY BY PRESIDENT KENNEDY. HEAVY SECURITY PRECAUTIONS WERE IN FORCE WHEN THE YUGOSLAV LEADER DROVE UP TO THE WHITE HOUSE FOR HIS ONE-DAY VISIT TO THE U.S. CAPITAL.

    OUTSIDE STOOD PICKETS PROTESTING AT PRESIDENT TITO'S VISIT. MOST OF THEM WERE REPORTED TO BE MEMBERS OF THE CROATIAN LIBERATION FRONT.

    IN HIS WELCOMING SPEECH, PRESIDENT KENNEDY SAID:--
    THEN, PRESIDENT TITO REPLIED. (DUE TO A TECHNICAL FAULT, SOME OF THE SOF IS INAUDIBLE.)
    NO DATE HAS BEEN SET FOR PRESIDENT KENNEDY'S VISIT TO YUGOSLAVIA. "WE SHALL SEE," WAS ALL PRESIDENT TITO WOULD SAY WHEN QUESTIONED ABOUT IT BY PRESSMEN.

    LATER, THE TWO LEADERS HAD A "FRANK DISCUSSION...IN A CORDIAL AND FRIENDLY ATMOSPHERE." AFTER HIS CALIFORNIA VISIT, PRESIDENT TITO WILL FLY TO NEW YORK TO ADDRESS THE UNITED NATIONS GENERAL ASSEMBLY BEFORE LEAVING FOR BELGRADE ON OCTOBER 25.
