Background: The world's biggest tent store has just opened up in Svinesund about four kilometres from the border with Norway. It is expected that more and more tents will come to this little town making it one of the largest tented markets in the world.
The reason for this somewhat remarkable development is simply economic. There is an extensive holiday traffic between Norway and Sweden, largely a one way business. And people going on holiday seldom return home without bringing presents and other things back with them. The tented market has been set up take advantage of this trend. The temptation to shop in Sweden is all the more strong because Norway, after years of war and Nazi occupation, is a relatively poor country, while her neighbour, a neutral during the conflict, has progressed to riches. Sweden has the attractive merchandise; Norway has not. Quality will be better, and probably cheaper than in Norway.
Hence the market at Svinesund and the bright prospects of the enterprising traders of the town. Almost on the border, it is virtually the last stopping place before moving over on to Norwegian soil.
You can even get spare parts for your car in Svinesund. If you are running a fairly old car there's sure to be a spare somewhere in this huge auto graveyard. Again, it is apparently cheaper to come over to Svinesund in this way than to buy your spares in Norway. Also they are easier to get. These transactions are quite legal, there are no customs difficulties.
Hundreds of thousands of Norwegian are rapidly becoming acquainted with the advantages of shopping in svinesund.
