Background: Iraq's Deputy Prime Minister in charge of Transport, Sa'doun Ghaidan, arrived in the Jordanian capital, Amman, on Tuesday (26 August) for a two-day visit to discuss joint projects between the two countries, and to sign an agreement creating the Iraqi Jordanian Joint Venture Company.

SYNOPSIS: The meeting in Amman was one of several throughout the summer to cement the developing relations between Jordan and her oil rich neighbour, Iraq. Mr. Sa'doun Ghaidan was greeted at the airport by the Iraqi Ambassador to Jordan as well as his Jordanian opposite number in transport, Ali Suheimat.

This visit is expected to set the seal on an earlier one in April by Iraq's senior Vice Premier, Taha Ramadan, during which it was decided that the two nations would set up a joint overland transport company with capital from both sides of about 35-million pounds (70 million dollars). As a non-oil producing country Jordan is heavily reliant on concessionary loans from her Arab oil-rich neighbours.

At a later meeting with Jordan's Prime minister (since resigned) Dr. Qassem Rimawi, before the eventual signing of the agreement, Mr. Chaidan discussed the use by Iraq of port facilities at Aqaba for importing its goods. Another aspect of the agreement covered the construction of a road linking Aqaba with Iraq to be financed entirely by the Baghdad government.
