Background: A Sudden wind lull marred the finish of the second Inshore race -- the third in the Admiral's Cup series -- at Cowes, ??? of Wight, U.K., on Wednesday (6 AUGUST).
Disaster struck on the final leg of the race, the upwind stretch back to Cowes. Two miles (3.2 kilometres) from home, the yachts became becalmed, and were left standing at the mercy of the pulling tide.
The day started well, with Australia hoping to pull back some of the ground the team lost in the first Inshore race on Monday. Bumblebee, skippered by John Kahlbetzer, took early lead ... as he had done in both the opening Cross Channel race on Saturday and the first Inshore event.
She stayed in front until hitting the calm, fighting off close challenges from fellow-Australian Love and War, West Germany's Duva and the U.S. boat Robin, under America's Cup helmsman Ted Hood. ??? tried to steer Bumblebee on a different line, but was forced to return to the rest of the fleet ... and wait for the fickle British weather to change.
For one competitor, the Canadian Diva, disaster had struck as early as the first ???. She went aground on the sandy bottom of the starting stretch.
