Background: Motor-cycle racing -- and World champion Barry Sheene of Britain has won the 'Motor Cycle News Superike Championship' at Brands Batch in England.
SYNOPSIS: John Williams on number four-740-cc Suzuki-was among the front-line starters with former World Champion Phil Read on 750-cc Yamaha number five. They were challenging Sheene on another 740 Suzuki, carrying number seven. Also in the front tow was fellow-Briton Mick Grant on number six, 750-cc Kawasaki.
The two-day Saturday-Sunday meeting was the traditional close of the international motor-cycle racing season. The field included a strong European entry, which featured riders like Giacomo Agostini, making his first appearance at Brands Hatch for three years, riding as usual for MV Augusta, on a four-cylinder 350. But in the earlier stages it was Mick Grant on the Kawasaki taking the lead.
Barry Sheene followed Grant closely throughout - so closely that when he finally overtook to take the winning chequered flag it was by a mere one-fifth of a second. Williams followed them across the line to take number three place.
