Background: INTRODUCTION: An estimated 50,000 people attended a massive political rally in the Indian capital of New Delhi on Sunday (13 December). They assembled to protest against the government securing a huge loan from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and what they called the failure of Prime Minister Indira Gandhi to check rising prices. The demonstration was organised by the powerful Bhartiya Janta party.

SYNOPSIS: The Bhartiya Janta is the biggest among India's many opposition parties. It has accused the government of continued misrule, particularly in areas concerning the economy.

The party's leader and former Foreign Minister Atala Behari Vajpayee was joined by other senior opposition members.

The huge crowd listened attentively as Mr.Vajpayee attacked the government and its policies. He alleged Mrs.Gandhi's administration had entered into a vicious partnership with the enemies of society -- smugglers, hoarders, blackmarketeers and hardened criminals.Mr.Vajpayee promised to fight those involved in illegal activities at all levels, form the villages to the highest places of power. In a direct attack on the Prime Minister, Mr.Vajpayee claimed Mrs.Gandhi had shown complete disregard for the parliamentary forums. He then warned this could lead to the opposition parties considering a total boycott of the parliamentary proceedings.
