Background: Motorcycle racing, and Belgian ace Gaston Rahier took the lead in the World 125 cc motocross championship on Sunday (1 May) when he won both sections of the Belgian Grand Prix. The race was run under appalling conditions.
SYNOPSIS: The riders got away cleanly after a general pile-up in a previous false start.
Two hours of constant rainfall before the race turned the track into a sea of mud. Competitors soon got stuck and fell off their machines.
Staying in the saddle often seemed more a question of luck than skill as the casualties mounted. Sometimes the only remedy was to get off and push.
Even when they did manage to say on board, crashes were inevitable as the mud made control impossible. Gaston Rahier, number eleven, was involved in this one.
The event was marred by an accident to the Japanese rider Watanabe, the former championship leader. He was taken to hospital with a suspected broken leg. Some of the competitors were so caked in mud that it looked as though they could hardly see. But the conditions were the same for everyone, and getting stuck in front of other riders obviously wasn't appreciated.
Belgian rider Gilbert de Roover rode a spectacular race. But victory was snatched from his grasp when he fell in the last lap, and he finished third.
